“Pink Ladies” by Gayatri Manchanda

Pink Ladies, 11×15 inches by Gayatri
Gayatri started painting about fifteen years ago, beginning with simple scenes of men and women going about the business of living their complex lives. She concentrates on two mediums – watercolours and acrylics. What she enjoys most is paintings of Indian folk and classical dancers trying to capture their movements as they create their magic on stage.Gayatri has not formally trained in art. She has an M.A. in English literature from Delhi University and a B.Ed degree as well. However she has taken advantage of the computer to interact with artists on websites and they have helped her greatly – trained artists giving good advice on compositon and colour, and tips on how to improve on technique while encouraging her to continue with her own style and interpretations.
She has changed much in her painting style over the years. She has attempted to capture the spirit of the current changes taking in India. It does not seem to be correct to continue portraying India as a land of largely rural people. It is in a great state of economic and social flux. As it tries to rise out of the past it is difficult to portray on canvas what it is really going through. Her abstracts reflect some of this ambiguity. Also since she has spent so many years living out of her country she feels this is a more honest way of painting. But she does plan to go back to a figurative style eventually.
By travelling to and living in many different countries – Egypt, Sri Lanka, Portugal, Canada, Russia and now in Bulgaria- as the wife of an Indian diplomat she is fortunate to have had a chance to be exposed to some really great artworks. These have been a great inspiration to her.
As an artist Gayatri insists one is forever learning. You can never stop.
